It was an incredible day in Kranjska Gora at the 2020 World Para Alpine Skiing World Cup for Mac Marcoux (Sault Ste Marie, Ont.) and the entire Canadian Para Alpine Ski Team.
Marcoux, along with guide Tristin Rodgers (Ottawa, Ont.) stood on top of the podium in a sixth straight World Cup race in the Men’s Visually Impaired category. They won the GS race by over three seconds. Marcoux was joined in the winners circle by Mollie Jepsen (West Vancouver, B.C.) and Alexis Guimond (Gatineau, Que.) who came in second in the Women’s Standing and Men’s Standing categories.
“Tristan and I are really happy with todays result! Kranjska has always been a struggle for me so I’m just excited be able to put two good runs in the bank and be able to carry some good momentum into the rest of the week!” said Marcoux.
The win gives Marcoux a 50th career World Cup podium, an incredible feet for an athlete who has been on the Canadian team since 2013. Marcoux, who spent the 2018-19 season recovering from a back injury, has had a very good start to the season, which shouldn’t surprise anyone.
The landmark has Marcoux looking back on his career, “I’ve never really been one to count results, but it is a really cool milestone! Hearing this today had me looking back on so many good times over the past seven years! I am excited to keep pushing and hopefully land on the box a little more in future races!”
Jepsen, who has had five podiums this World Cup season, is excited after taking last season to recover from illness.
“Today was my first day racing in Kranjska Gora, it’s a sweet track! I was really happy to put down two clean runs! Super excited for another two days of GS, looking for more speed tomorrow! Thanks to all the coaches and the team for keeping things so fun and pushing everyday after a couple long weeks of racing and training!”
Guimond is taking his skiing back to its’ roots, having fun and trying to not put too much pressure on himself. The change in race routine seems to be working.
"This season I really wanted to come back strong. Last season was not my best so this season I’ve come in with a different mentality and with a different race routine. I was really ready to race and really happy with my results so far. This season I just want to have fun," said Guimond.
The team will be back at it tomorrow with another giant slalom from Kranjska Gora, Slovenia.
