Mayor's Cup update

Following a 14 – 6 drubbing to Godfrey Realty, Assante/Mr. Transmission rebounded with a 3 – 0 win over the Soo Kings in Open Division action at the Mayor's Cup on Monday. Mike Maulucci was outstanding in recording the shutout for Assante/Mr. T.

Following a 14 – 6 drubbing to Godfrey Realty, Assante/Mr. Transmission rebounded with a 3 – 0 win over the Soo Kings in Open Division action at the Mayor's Cup on Monday. Mike Maulucci was outstanding in recording the shutout for Assante/Mr. T. Assante/Mr. T. jumped out to a 2 – 0 lead after one period on goals from Ari Vitale and Laine Bertin. Maulucci held the fort the rest of the way. Nathan Inch put the game away with an empty net goal with 54 seconds remaining in the game.

The first of two 35 and Over Division games was decided in a shoot out. Boissoneau Bus Lines took a 2 – 1 lead over the Mohawks into the second period on goals from Brian Dailey and Scott Sloss. Garth MacMaster tied the game for the Mohawks early into the third period. Tim Inch and Paul Syrette scored for Boissoneau Bus Lines to give them a 4 – 3 lead until Rick Reckla tied the game at 4 with 2:44 remaining in the game. Five shooters per side were required to decide the game with Frank Gaccione scoring the game winner for Boissoneau Bus Lines.

In the final game of the night, John Shamess of Mr. Transmission made several spectacular saves early in the game and it seemed to take the wind out of Weedman's sails. Mr. Transmission carried the play and were leading by a score of 4 – 0 after two periods. Scoring for Mr. Transmission came from 4 different sources. Weedman saw a glimmer of hope when Bob Lindsay netted one with 9:52 remaining in the game. Mr. Transmission killed off two late penalties until Bob Lindsay scored with 7 seconds remaining to make the final score 4 – 2 for Mr. Transmission.

*** SUNDAY'S RECAP:

Sunday night at the Mayor’s Cup started off with a 35 and Over contest that provided end to end exciting action. Weedman and Boissoneau Bus Lines needed a shootout to determine a winner. Travis Halerow opened the scoring for Boissoneau Bus Lines 5 minutes into the first period. Scott Warick replied for Weedman with 7 minutes left in the first. Weedman took a 3 – 1 lead into the third period on goals from Louis Caruso and Jody Wilson. In the third, Frank Giacconne narrowed the margin to 3 – 2 with 6:57 remaining in the game. Travis Halerow tied the score with his second goal of the game, with 1:04 remaining. The game was decided in an exciting shootout, with both teams needing to go to a fifth shooter. Bill Carriere scored the eventual winner for Weedman to record their third shootout win in 3 games.

In the Open Division, Godfrey Realty took it to defending champions, Assante/ Mr. T. Godfrey Realty was leading 9 – 1 at one point, and cruised to a 14 – 6 victory. Kevin MacKay and Paul Godfrey both recorded hat tricks for Godfrey Realty. Nathan Inch replied twice for Assante/Mr. T. in a losing cause.

Needing a win to keep their Mayor’s Cup hopes alive, in the 35 and Over Division, Smack Daddy’s jumped out to a 3 – 0 lead over Microage/Smack Daddy’s after the first period in this penalty filled affair. Together, the teams sat in the penalty box for 66 minutes. Mark Theriault and Dan Nardo each scored twice for Smack Daddy’s and John Nardo had two goals for Microage/Smack Daddy’s. Three second period goals, all on the power play, brought Microage/Smack Daddy’s within a goal, but Dan Nardo scored for Smack Daddy’s while 2 men down, with a lazer beam into the top corner. Shane Maurice scored the eventual game winner early in the third period and Mark Theriault cinched the win with 2 minutes remaining.
