Black Sox Win Another Tournament

For the second consecutive weekend the Cambrian Nissan Black Sox have won a high school tournament.

This past Saturday in Escanaba, Michigan the Black Sox defeated the Alpena Wildcats 4-2 in the championship game of the Escanaba Eskymos High School Tournament.

Alpena jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, scoring two unearned runs off of starting pitcher J.J. Bergamin. In the top of the third inning, Wyatt Curry hit a two out solo home run to bring the Sox to within one.

In the sixth, Tyler Wilson led off with a walk and was forced at second base on a fielder's choice by Joey Lesage. Kyle Sayers then doubled down the left field line putting runners at second and third with one out. Left fielder Nick Moon hit a 3-1 fastball over the fence in left centre for a 3-run home run putting the Black Sox in the lead 4-2, a lead that Bergamin protected through the final two innings.

Bergamin allowed 5 hits, while striking out 8 and walking 2 for his second win of the year. J.J. was chosen as the most valuable pitcher of the tournament for his effort in the championship game.

Nick Moon was selected as the tournament's most valuable hitter for his clutch three run home run and two RBI's in the opening game victory over the Marinette Marines from Wisconsin.

The Cambrian Nissan Black Sox opened the tournament with a 9-2 win over the Marines from Marinette, Wisconsin. The Black Sox broke open a 2-2 game with two runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and three more in the seventh. Andrew Toni went the distance to pick up his third win of the season. He scattered three hits, walked four and struck out a career high 10 batters. Offensively, Tyler Wilson had three hits and scored three runs. Joey Lesage and Wyatt Curry had two singles each as the Black Sox collected a total of 10 hits. The Black Sox record improved to 8-2.

The team stayed over and played an exhibition doubleheader against the Gladstone Indians.

Black Sox win Rudyard Tournament

The Cambrian Nissan Midget Black Sox captured the Rudyard High School Invitational Tournament two weekends ago in impressive fashion.

The Black Sox defeated the host team, the Rudyard Bulldogs, in the championship game by a score of 20-2 with the game being called after four innings due to the mercy rule. The Black Sox scored 3 runs in the top of the first inning and followed that up with 5 more in the second, 3 in the third and 9 in the fourth for the victory.

Jake Yukich picked up the win going three innings allowing 2 hits while striking out 5 and walking 3. Jake Lake came on to pitch the fourth inning and allowed 1 run on 1 hit , walking 3 and striking out the side.

Offensively, the Black Sox were led by Tyler Wilson who hit a three run home run in the fourth to go with a pair of singles. Wilson finished the game with 4 RBI's. 3B Wyatt Curry had 2 doubles, a single and 2 RBI's while Chris Bunomo chipped in 2 doubles and a single. The team banged out 17 hits in the game.

The Rudyard Bulldogs reached the championship game by defeating Newberrry High School 9-7 while the Cambrian Nissan Black Sox defeated the Sault High Blue Devils 4-3 in an exciting game.

Winning pitcher Andrew Toni had a three hit shut out going heading into the last inning. The lead off batter for the Blue Devils reached base when catcher Dalton Thibodeau over threw first base on a missed third strike.

With two out Jeff Giddings singled to put two men on. That brought Zack Rambo to the plate representing the tying run. On a 1-1 count, Rambo hit a fastball for a towering three run home run to tie the contest. Toni struck out the next hitter to end the inning.

In the bottom half of the inning with one out Joey Lesage reached base on an error by the shortstop. Lesage then stole second base with Dalton Thibodeau at the plate. After fouling off several pitches from reliever, Rico Castro, Thibodeau singled sharply to right field sending Lesage home with the winning run and sending the Black Sox into the championship game.

Toni went the distance to pick up his 2 win of the season. He allowed 5 hits, striking out 7 and walked only 1 batter. The Black Sox have an overall record of 5-1 for the season.
