North Stars continue to dominate

The Soo North Stars continue to show no sings of slowing down in their quest for another Great North Midget League championship.

The North Stars stretched their GNML win streak to 14 games with a pair of victories on the road over the weekend.

On Saturday, the North Stars used goals from Tyler Gendron, Jake McClelland and Derrek Coccimiglio in a 3-1 victory over the Kirkland Lake 87's. Bret Veerman replied with the lone goal for the 87's.

Gendron added a pair of assists for the locals while Michael Quesnele also chipped in a pair. Ryan Dube recorded the win in goal.

On Sunday, Paul Dupont scored the game winner and added two more assists as the North Stars doubled the New Liskeard Cubs 4-2.

Jason Bird added a goal and an assist for the winners while Nick Minardi and Jake Reid scored once each. McClelland chipped in a pair of assists while Travis O'Brien was credited with the win in net.

Alain Duguay and Martin Toupin replied with goals for the Cubs.

The victories improve the North Stars record to 21-1-1-1 for 44 points and a 15 point cushion over the second place Cubs.

Gendron continues to lead the league in scoring with 20 goals and 25 assists for 45 points. Dupont is second with 19 goals and 41 points while Bird is sixth with 11 goals and 29 points.

O'Brien and Dube remain the league's top two goaltenders as O'Brien has posted a minuscule 1.38 goals-against-average and four shutouts in 13 games while Dube has a 2.16 GAA to go with two shutouts in 11 appearances.

The locals will take a break from GNML competition to play in the Waterloo Gold Puck Tournament this coming weekend.

Next home action for the North Stars is Saturday, Dec. 18 and Sunday, Dec. 19 against the Rayside Balfour Sabrecats at the John Rhodes Community Centre starting at 7 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
