After concluding the round robin with a big win, the Soo North Stars dropped a tough overtime decision in the quarterfinal round of the Sudbury Big Nickel Major AAA Hockey Tournament on Saturday.

The North Stars opened with a 6-1 win over Oshawa's Don Cherry's in the final round robin game before falling to Rayside Balfour 2-1 in overtime in the quarterfinals.

Derrek Coccimiglio had two goals and one assist in the win over Oshawa while Trevor McNutt also scored twice. Singles went to Dean Howard and Dan Vernelli, who also added an assist each. Adam Pyymaki recorded three assists.

Vernelli scored the lone goal in the semi-final loss.

The NorthStars are back in action next weekend at the John Rhodes Community Centre against the Timmins Majors. Game times Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

*** SOO THUNDER:

The Soo Thunder finished the tournament with a 0-1-3 record after concluding the round robin with a 2-2 tie against the Richmond Hill Stars in the major bantam division. Mickey Sartoretto and Josh Cerasuolo scored the Thunder goals.

*** SOO NATIONAL SUPPLY:

Soo National Supply finished with a 1-3 record in the pee wee major division after dropping their final two games on Saturday.

Kyle Paat and Patrick Watling scored for the Soo in a 3-2 loss to the Toronto Marlboros while Anthony Butorac scored the lone goal in a 6-1 loss to the Quinte Red Devils.
