North Stars pad GNML lead

The Soo North Stars have opened a nine point gap in the standings after a pair of big victories over second place Timmins on the road.

The Great North Midget League leading North Stars scored a 5-2 win over the Timmins Majors on Saturday before edging the Majors 3-2 in overtime on Sunday.

Zac Torquato paced the North Stars on Saturday with two goals while singles were scored by Paul Dupont, Jake McClelland and Matt D'Agostini.

On Sunday, Torquato, Matt Caria and Lucas Goodall provided the scoring.

With the wins, the North Stars improve to 16 wins and two overtime losses for 34 points in 18 GNML games. The locals hold a nine point advantage over Timmins and a 10 point lead over Kirkland Lake, who the North Stars hold three games in hand on.

The North Stars, who have yet to lose a league game in regulation time this season, boast the league's best offense with 104 goals for a 5.8 goal per game average and the league's stingiest defense having allowed only 44 goals for a 2.4 goal per game average.

The team's leading scorer is Michael D'Agostini, who sits third among the league leaders with 12 goals and 24 assists for 36 points. Michael Sharp with 14 goals, Torquato with 12 and Caria with 11 have 28 points each. Matt D'Agostini with 14 goals and Adam Kauppi with 11 have 26 points each.

Michael Maulucci is the league's top goaltender with a sparkling 1.86 goals-against-average in 11 games. Travis O'Brien is sixth in the league with a 3.27 GAA in eight games.

The North Stars hit the road again next weekend for a pair of games in Kirkland Lake against the third place Legion 87's on Saturday and Sunday.

The two teams will then return to the Sault for another pair of games on November 29th and 30th.
