North Stars win Gold Puck tournament

The Soo North Stars were crowned champions of the Waterloo Gold Puck Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

The North Stars, who finished the tournament with a 5-1 record, edged the Toronto Jr. Canadiens 3-2 in the title game.

Zack McNally scored the game winner with 4:27 remaining in the third period to secure the title. Brad DiCandia and Jake Reid also scored for the winners while Travis O'Brien recorded the win in goal.

The locals advanced to the final with a 3-1 victory over the Markham Waxers in the semi-final on Sunday morning. In the quarterfinals, the Soo shutout the Halton Hurricanes 1-0.

In the round robin, the North Stars opened the tournament with a 3-1 loss to the Whitby Wildcats. The team followed with an 8-1 win over the Cumberland Barons and a 5-1 decision over the Gloucester Rangers.

The North Stars return home to resume Great North Midget League play with a pair of games against the Rayside Balfour Jr. Sabrecats on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. at the John Rhodes Community Centre.
