NOSSA report: St. Mary's, St. Basil, SJD headed to OFSAA

The Sir James Dunn Eagles girls volleyball teams and the senior boys basketball teams from St. Mary's and St. Basil all captured NOSSA championships over the weekend.

The Sir James Dunn Eagles girls volleyball teams and the senior boys basketball teams from St. Mary's and St. Basil all captured NOSSA championships over the weekend.

Sir James Dunn captured both the junior and senior divisions at the Northern Ontario Secondary School Association AAA volleyball championships at White Pines while the St. Mary's Knights won the AA basketball crown and the St. Basil Saints the single A title in Sudbury.

All three senior division teams will now prepare for the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Association (OFSAA) championships next week. The Eagles will head to Stratford March 7-8 while St. Mary's travels to Belleville March 6-8 and St. Basil to Sturgeon Fall March 6-8.

Both Sir James Dunn (pictured) and St. Mary's are making repeat appearances at the provincial championships.

*** NOSSA AAA VOLLEYBALL:

The Eagles, who captured their 12th consecutive senior division city championship last week, defended their regional crown on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Sudbury's Lockerby Vikings by scores of 25-17, 16-25 and 16-14.

In junior, the Eagles defeated North Bay's St. Joseph-Scollard Hall 2-1 in the championship game by scores of 25-21, 16-25, 15-9.

Both the White Pines Wolverines senior and junior squads finished the round robin at 0-3.

NOSSA AA VOLLEYBALL:

In North Bay, the Korah Colts seniors were eliminated in the round robin after dropping all three matches. In junior, the Bawating Braves also finished with an 0-3 record.

NOSSA 'A' VOLLEYBALL:

On the Manitoulin Island, the St. Basil Saints senior girls finished at 0-4 despite sending all four matches to the third and deciding set.

In junior, the Saints fell in the championship game to Sturgeon Falls' Franco Cite after finishing the round robin with an undefeated record. In the final, St. Basil dropped two straight sets by scores of 18-25.

NOSSA AA BASKETBALL:

The St. Mary's Knights captured the title with a 52-44 overtime win over North Bay's West Ferris Trojans. Pat Murray topped the Knights with 19 points while Tyler Binkley added 16 points and Jordan Forbes 11.

In junior, the Korah Colts fell 72-67 to Sudbury's Notre Dame in the semi-finals.

NOSSA 'A' BASKETBALL:

The St. Basil Saints earned a provincial berth with a 49-40 win over Sudbury's MacDonald-Cartier in the championship game. Dave Pozzebon led the Saints with 11 points while Chris Hunt and Andrew King added 10 each.

NOSSA AAA BASKETBALL:

The Korah Colts seniors were eliminated by Sudbury Lasalle 62-55 in the opening game of the single elimination tournament.

In junior, the Bawating Braves fell 40-30 to Lasalle in the title game. Jordan Fresque led the Braves with 13 points.
