The Sault College Cougars captured three wins on home court this weekend as the women's volleyball team swept a pair of matches while the men's basketball team also emerged victorious.

In men's basketball, the Cougars continue to chase down an Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) playoff spot and improved their record to 8-2 on Saturday afternoon with a 85-66 win over Sarnia's Lambton College.

Nathan Whalen led the Cougars with 21 points while Jean Louis Ouattara added 18. Brady Bolan, Mike Bouchard and Sean Seivwright scored 10 points each.

The Cougars sit in first place in the west division with 16 points although Niagara, who will visit Sault Ste. Marie next weekend, sits two points behind with two games in hand.

In volleyball, the Cougars opened the weekend with a 3-0 victory over Sheridan College.

The Cougars, who won by scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-22, were led by Desiree Simon with 19 points on 14 kills, three stuff blocks and two service aces. Ashley Browning added 16 points on 11 kills and five aces.

On Saturday, the lady Cougars defeated Lambton 3-0 by scores of 25-20, 25-21, 25-16. Simon scored 20 points on 11 kills, two blocks and seven aces while Browning added 15 points on eight kills and seven aces.

With the pair of wins, Sault College improved their record to 5-9 on the season.

Next action for the Cougars is at home this Friday as the men's basketball team will meet Niagara in a first place showdown beginning at 8 p.m.

On Saturday, the women will conclude their season with a matchup against Niagara at 1 p.m.
