SPORTS NOTEBOOK: Minor football ends week two

The Sault Minor Football Association completed their second week on play with four games on Sunday at Queen Elizabeth Field.

In bantam division play, Wesley Greco's two touchdowns led Brody's past the Firefighters 38-6. Tim Childs, Matt Wagner, Todd Wagner and Ryan Lund scored a touchdown each for Brody's. Scoring details for the Firefighters was unavailable. In the other contest, Craig Rushon scored a touchdown as Scholars beat TinGrins 13-0.

In tyke division action, Darcy Casola scored four touchdowns to lead MemberCARE past CleanGear 28-22. Caleb Hooey scored two touchdowns for CleanGear while Tyler Pelletier added one.

In the other game, Rome's defeated Brody's 49-21. Mike Colizza scored two touchdowns for the winners while single touchdowns were scored by Tyler Vernelli, Jeff Guzzo, Christian Mahler, Max Cicchello and Patrick Hannah. Jared Theriault, with two, and Ben Chichelli scored touchdowns for Brody's.

*** NOLAN TO CANUCKS:

Garden River product Brandon Nolan was selected in the fourth round by the Vancouver Canucks on the second day of selections at the National Hockey League entry draft in Nashville on Sunday.

Nolan, who was taken 111th overall, re-entered the draft after failing to sign a contract with the New Jersey Devils, who selected the Oshawa Generals forward in the 2001 Entry Draft.

Nolan is the son of former Soo Greyhounds head coach Ted Nolan and the cousin of former Greyhound forward Al Nolan.

*** FACTORY STOCK RACE HEATS UP:

After only four weeks of racing, a serious battle has begun at the top of the factory stock division point standings at Laird International Raceway.

Jason Praysner sits at the top of the division with 150 points while Dave Slingsby is riding his bumper with 145 points. Both drivers narrowly missed out on the points title last season, which was won by Parker Brockelbank. Brockelbank hasn't been racing since the season's opening week.

Rob Hiiemaa has built a lead in the late models with 125 points. George Wilson and Dennis Varcoe sit second with 76 points apiece. Barry Glenn, with 154 points, leads Norm Miller by 26 points in the pure stock class while Bill Butler has a 15-point lead over Mike McCarthy in the stock fours.

Racing continues on Thursday at 7 p.m. with qualifying beginning at 6:15 p.m. The late models will run a twin 30 feature.
