SSMAC SWIMMERS A FORCE AT LONG COURSE MEET

Several Sault Ste. Marie Aquatic Club members had multiple medal winning finishes at the East Side Mario's Long Course swim meet in Sudbury over the weekend.

Steven Lee, 10, had four first place finishes and three seconds, en route to the high point trophy award for boys' 10 under.

Twelve year-old Julia Turgeon was solid with a gold medal race in the 100-metre freestyle, and six other second place finishes. Also strong was Becky Day, competing in the girls' 13-14 age division, returning with a second place finish, two thirds and six other top eight results.

Wendy Oleskiw, (girls' 15 and over) earned two first place spots in the 50-metre and 100-metre freestyle, and placed second in two other races.

Brian Lee, 13, had an exemplary weekend finishing with a second place finish and three thirds. Lee's times have now qualified him to compete at the Provincial Championships, as well as Club Nationals, in the summer.

Josh Lawrence placed second in four races and had four other top eight placements. Patrick Bonne, 13, placed fifth in the 200-metre backstroke event.

Other strong performances were registered by Kalen Critchley, 10, who had a fourth place finish and two fifths, and Erin Lee, 10, who won bronze in the 50-metre backstroke. Dylan Reid, age 14, placed fourth in one race and fifth in another.

Sarah Theodossiou, 13, earned fifth spot in the 200-metre freestyle and a sixth in the 100-metre breaststroke. Theodossiou had two other top eight results. Elyse McCarthy, 14, placed seventh in the 200-metre breaststroke, while Michael Lawrence, 11, found fifth in the 800-metre freestyle event.

Carrie-Lynn Smale competing in the girls' 11-12 age category placed eighth in the 100-metre freestyle. Christopher Carlyle, 11, had two top eight finishes. Adam Mossa, 13, garnered seventh in the 200-metre backstroke.

Alex Bonne (15 and over age category) earned 5 top eight finishes.

In relay action, Micah Barban, Erin Lee, Kalen Critchley and Chenoa Naylor combined to earn a silver in the girls' 10 and under 200-metre medley relay. Lee, Critchley, Naylor and Sarah Wright placed second in the 200-metre freestyle relay.

Kendall Barban, Julia Turgeon, Carrie-Lynne Smale and Cary Mathews earned a second place finish in the girls' 11-12 200-metre freestyle relay, and a fourth in the medley relay.

In the girls' 13-14 age division, Day, Turgeon, Theodossiou and Megan Shaw won silver in the 200-metre freestyle relay.

In the boys' 13-14 age division Lee, Reid, Lawrence and Bonne combined to win gold in the 200-metre medley relay. Lee, Mossa, Jack Carlyle and Bonne earned third spot in the 200-metre freestyle relay.

The next competition for SSMAC swimmers is the North Bay Ironman & Invitational the weekend of May 26-28.
