SSMAC BEGINS LONG COURSE SEASON
Thirteen members of the Sault Ste. Marie Aquatic club competed in the NEOR #4 Development Long course swim meet in Sudbury this past weekend, returning with impressive results.
Leading the way for SSMAC was Wendy Oleskiw competing in the girls’ 13-14 age category. Oleskiw placed first in the 50- and 200-metre freestyle events, and second in three other races.
Also finishing strong was Julia Turgeon, 12, placing first in the 400-metre freestyle, and second in the 200-metre backstroke and 50-metre freestyle events. Turgeon also found third spot in the 200-metre freestyle and 400-metre individual medley.
In the boys’ 11 and under category, Christopher Carlyle garnered gold in the 200-metre freestyle, and two silvers in the 50-metre and 400-metre freestyle events. Carlyle placed third in the 200-metre breaststroke.
Brendan Wilton, 11, placed first in the 100-metre breaststroke, and fourth in the 200-metre individual medley and 50-metre freestyle races.
Shane Rock, 10, had two fourth place finishes.
Rayne Fisher (girls’ 11-12 age category), placed fifth in the 100-metre breaststroke event, while Amelia Marrato, (10 and under) placed fifth in the 100-metre breaststroke.
Jack Carlyle, swimming in the boys 12-13 age group placed first in the 100-metre freestyle, and found second spot in the 200-metre individual medley.
In the boys’ 14-15 age category, David Pihlaja secured a third and a fourth place finish.
Alex Bonne, (16 and over age category) finished second in the 200-metre backstroke, third in the 800-metre freestyle and had three other top eight finishes.
“Our swimmers were awesome this weekend, “says Senior Coach Bill Park. “ I was pleased with everybody’s effort. We are in an excellent position to compete at the Ontario Provincial Division Two Team Championships in Sudbury April 21-23”.
