SSMAC BREAKS RECORDS IN STATE MEET

A 17-member contingent from the Sault Ste. Marie Aquatic Club traveled to Rudyard this weekend, placing fourth overall and breaking several home team records in the process.

Brian Lee (boys' 11-12 age category) registered three first place finishes, breaking records in the 200-metre individual medley, and in the 100-metre freestyle.

Josh Lawrence (boys' 13-14 age category) earned gold in three races, breaking records in the 200-metre individual medley and in the 100-metre backstroke.

Hannah Murray (girls' 9-10 age category) finished first in three races, breaking records in the 50-metre and 100-metre freestyle events.

Erin Lee (girls' 8 and under) earned three gold medals, breaking the pool record in the 100-metre individual medley.

Other SSMAC swimmers to register outstanding performances included Steven Lee, 10, winning the 50-metre breaststroke, 50-metre butterfly, and the 100-metre individual medley.

Carrie-Lynn Smale, 10, finished second in the 50-metre freestyle, 50-metre backstroke and the 100-metre individual medley, while Chelsea Griswold, 14, earned first in the 50-metre freestyle and the 200-metre individual medley. Griswold placed third in the 100-metre breaststroke.

Kellie Geiling finished in third spot in the girls' 13-14 50-metre and 100-metre freestyle events and seventh in the 100-metre breaststroke. Kendall Barban (girls' 11-12) earned a third place finish in the 50-metre freestyle, as well as a fifth and eighth place standing. Lydia Murray (girls' 8 and under) garnered a second, third and fifth place finish.

Elyse McCarthy secured third in the girls' 13-14 200-metre individual medley and fourth in the 100-metre freestyle. Shane Rock placed in the top-eight in three races, while Michael Lawrence earned a sixth and an eighth place finish.

In relay action, the team of Hannah Murray, Carrie-Lynn Smale, Erin Lee, and Steven Lee (mixed 9-10 age category) won gold in the 200-metre freestyle and 200-metre medley relays.

In the mixed 11-12 age category, Kendall Barban, Brian Lee, Celine Gregoire and Michael Lawrence earned fourth spot in the 200-metre medley relay, while Mickey Comery, Shane Rock, Lydia Murray and Ryan Griswold placed seventh.

The team of Barban, Gregoire, Lee (Brian) and Griswold placed second in the 11-12 mixed 200-metre freestyle relay, while Micah Barban, Comery, Rock and Lawrence (Michael) combined to place ninth.

Chelsea Griswold, McCarthy, Geiling and Josh Lawrence earned two second place finishes in the mixed 13-14 200-metre freestyle and 200-metre medley relays.

"I was very anxious to see how our swimmers would fare against our competitors in the States", says Coach Nancy Day. "I was very proud of our swimmers, they worked hard and swam very well."
