Steelers bitten by Bulldogs

The Sault Steelers were looking for a result much like last season.

When the Steelers walked into North Bay for the first game of a home-and-home series with the Bulldogs last season, the locals manhandled North Bay to lopsided win and a boost toward an undefeated regular season.

But this year, the Bulldogs had other things in mind.

The Bulldogs avenged the loss with a tight 14-12 victory on Saturday night in the Hall of Fame Game at Rolly Fisher Field in North Bay.

The loss drops the Steelers record to 1-2 in Northern Football Conference play.

North Bay all-star receiver Ford Morland hauled in the game winning the touchdown.

The Steelers, who will enjoy a bye next weekend, will get the chance to payback the Bulldogs when the teams meet again on July 3 at Rocky DiPietro Field beginning at 7 p.m.

*** RUSHON INDUCTED INTO HALL:

The Sault Steelers franchise celebrated the induction of head coach Barry Rushon into the Northern Football Conference Hall of Fame during a ceremony in North Bay on Saturday night.

Rushon has piloted the Steelers since their return to the NFC as the Sault Storm in 1996.

Including Saturday's result, Rushon holds a 35-35 all-time record in the regular season and a 7-6 record in the playoffs.

Rushon led the team to the league championship three times in 1996, 2000 and 2003 while being named the Sid Forster winner as coach of the year in each of those three seasons.

Outside of the NFC, Rushon, who now guides the White Pines Wolverines, led the Bawating Braves to back-to-back NOSSA championships in 1989 and 1990.

Joining Rushon in the Hall is Richard Begin, a former player with the Brampton Bears and North Bay, Charlton Corbin, also from Brampton, and builder Paul Condon from North Bay.

Elsewhere in the NFC on Saturday, the surprising Sudbury Spartans remained unbeaten with a come from behind 36-29 win over the Milton Marauders.

The Mega City Maddogs blanked the Markham Raiders 20-0, the Oakville Longhorns beat up on the Quinte Limestone Panthers 59-7 and the Oshawa Hawkeyes handled the Tri-City Outlaws 25-3.
