Steelers drop road decision, JV Sabercats remain unbeaten

The Steelers dropped a 28-7 decision in Sudbury on Saturday night while the Sabercats rolled to a convincing win in over Waterloo

The Sault Steelers fell to 2-3 on Saturday in Northern Football Conference action.

Derrick Rantala had a pair of touchdowns as the Sudbury Spartans beat the Steelers 28-7 Saturday evening at the James Jerome Sports Complex in Sudbury.

The Spartans, who improve to 4-1 with the victory, opened up a 28-0 lead before Ron Kelly got the Steelers on the board with a fourth quarter touchdown.

Nicholas Rideout and Josh Cuomo also had touchdowns for the Spartans.

The Steelers return to action on June 29 at home against the Oakville Longhorns. Kickoff at Rocky DiPietro Field is set for 7 p.m.

The Sault Sabercats junior varsity team remains unbeaten thanks to a 56-20 win over Waterloo in Ontario Football Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

Mike Nicoletta had four touchdowns for the Sabercats, who improve to 5-0-1 with the victory.

Carmen Caputo added a pair of majors while Ryan Barnes and Konnor Ritchie also had touchdowns for the Sabercats.

The JV team heads into a bye week next weekend before wrapping up the road portion of its regular season schedule against Hamilton on July 7. The team then concludes the regular season on July 13 at home against Sarnia.

The Sabercats varsity team was off this season and returns to action on June 30 at home against Waterloo before wrapping up the regular season with road games against Brampton on July 6 and Hamilton on July 13.
