Steelers roll past Bulldogs

The Sault Steelers got the revenge they were looking for.

After surrendering a late game touchdown which resulted in a 14-12 loss in North Bay two weeks ago, the Sault Steelers used a suffocating defense to roll past the North Bay Bulldogs 23-1 on Saturday night at Rocky DiPietro Field.

The win improves the Steelers record to 2-2 at the midway point of the Northern Football Conference regular season.

Frank Farkas' 27 yard touchdown reception from quarterback Rob Filmore late in the first quarter is all the Steelers would need offensively as the defense caused all sorts of havoc for the Bulldogs offense.

NFC hall of famer and current Steeler defensive lineman Stu Waite proved to be too much for the North Bay offensive line to contain with four sacks on quarterback Dave Wilson.

The Steelers defense, which allowed only 126 offensive yards, constantly chased Wilson from the pocket, taking much of the sync out of the Bulldogs offense.

Wilson managed to complete 17 of 25 passes although many completions came on quick timing routes that were quickly stopped by the defensive unit.

Brandon Lewis and Gordie Campbell also recorded a sack each. Jason Giosa recorded four tackles and Quintino DiLabio added 3.5.

Seth Robinson also had a big game defensively for the Steelers, which only surrendered a point off a missed field goal attempt, with a pair of interceptions.

Keegan Franklin scored on a one yard run in the second quarter to give the Steelers a 16-0 half time lead after Larry Clemons caught a two point convert attempt.

Clemons capped the scoring with 1:18 remaining on a 33 yard reception from Filmore.

Anthony Posteraro booted two converts and added another point on a 53 yard punt through the end zone to open the scoring.

Filmore completed seven of 10 passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns while leading all rushers with 53 yards on four carries.

Toby Traveson added 43 rushing yards on 13 carries and Franklin gained 36 yards on 13 attempts. Clemons hauled in two passes for 46 yards to lead all receivers.

Josh Gauthier caught a pair of passes for 34 yards but did most of his damage on special teams. The speedy Gauthier ran back a kickoff for 60 yards and returned three punts for 68 yards.

The Steelers remain home to face the Milton Marauders next Saturday beginning at 7 p.m. at Rocky DiPietro Field.

The Milton contest will prove to be a huge test for the Steelers after Milton knocked off the mighty Oakville Longhorns on Saturday night.
