Steelhawks dethrone Colts to win junior football title (7 photos)

They met twice in the regular season, each winning once.

On Thursday night, the Superior Heights Steelhawks dethroned the defending junior high school football champs, beating the Korah Colts 21-0 at Superior Heights Thursday.

The win by the Steelhawks ends a three-year run of city titles at the junior level for the Colts.

After a scoreless opening half, the Steelhawks opened the third quarter by getting on the scoreboard.

After starting a drive deep in their own territory, Superior Heights took the first lead of the night midway through the third quarter as Dean Breton ran the ball in from one yard out. A convert by Gabe Barkley made the score 7-0 Steelhawks.

The Steelhawks increased the lead as Barkley ran the ball in from one yard out. A convert by Barkley made the score 14-0 Superior Heights.

Breton capped off the scoring as he ran the ball in from 23 yards out in the fourth quarter. Barkley hit the convert to make the final 21-0.

Breton finished the day with 214 yards rushing on 30 carries for the Steelhawks. Caden McLeod had 75 yards rushing on 11 carries while Barkley ran the ball 14 times for 40 yards.

Defensively for Superior Heights, McLeod had seven tackles and an assisted tackle while Breton had six tackles and an assisted tackle.

Offensively for Korah, Wes Pomeroy had 46 yards rushing on nine carries and had seven tackles and two assisted tackles defensively.

Lucas Malcolm had eight tackles for the Colts while Dante Scaglione also had seven tackles.

On Thursday, the junior football award winners were announced.

Barkley was named the league MVP.

Scaglione took the honour of the most valuable lineman.

Dean Breton of Superior Heights was named the top offensive player while Owen Trecartin of Korah and Caden McLeod of Superior Heights shared the defensive award.

The senior awards saw Jacob Jurich of Korah take home most outstanding player honours.

Dylan Monico of St. Mary’s was named the most valuable lineman.

Mitchell DellaVedova was named the top offensive player and the top defensive player award went to Tyler Brechin of Koragh.

Korah’s Noah Grasley was named the top receiver.

Senior all-stars included Jurich, Brechin, Grasley, Jordan Robinson-Wright, Ethan Fawcett, Aaron Keranen, Jack Naccarato, Thomas Thibeault, and Zac Zeppa; Monico, Carter Bonin, Martine Colicchio, Aaron Wheten, Patrick Sarlo, and Carter Ianni of St. Mary’s; and DellaVedova, Ethan West, Brennan Fisher, and Cameron Taylor of Superior Heights.
