The Stitch King Senators of the Sault Major Hockey Association captured the gold medal in the Northern Ontario Hockey Association playdowns held in Blind River this past weekend.

After two losses on Friday to Blind River 8–5 and National Telaconnect 6–4, Stitch King rebounded on Saturday by defeating Wawa 8-5 and Temiscaming Shores.

By finishing fourth after the round robin play, the Senators were matched up up against the first place Blind River Badgers, who were the favourite to win the tournament.

Stitch King found themselves behind 3-1 with just under six minutes to play in the game but a timely short-handed goal by Michael Brunetta gave the team new life. Shortly after, the Senators tied the score and with just 1:29 left, struck again to take the win and knock Blind River out of the tournament.

In the final against National Teleconnect, also of the Sault Major Hockey Association, Stitch King found themselves down again 5–2 late in the second period.

But Stitch King came out in the third period and scored six unanswered goals to go ahead to stay. National came back with a goal but the Senators potted an empty net goal to seal the victory 9-6.
