The Soo Thunderbirds scored two goals in each period to cruise past the Manitoulin Islanders 6-1 on Saturday night at the John Rhodes Community Centre.
The victory sets the stage for the Thunderbirds as they prepare for a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League showdown with the Northern Michigan Black Bears on Tuesday night in the Michigan Sault. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the Big Bear Arena.
Mike McMillan and Ryan Maunu each scored once and added an assist in the victory for the Thunderbirds while singles went to Tyler Gendron, Jeff Elliott, Grant McGee and Kyle Rodgers. Justin Shelleby and Chris Towell each recorded a pair of assists.
Tyler Corston-Moore replied with the lone goal for the Islanders.
