Thunderbirds conclude NOJHL regular season

The team now shifts into playoff mode, where they will face the Blind River Beavers

The Soo Thunderbirds wrapped up the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League regular season on Saturday night on the road.

The team dropped a 4-3 decision to the Soo (Mich.) Eagles Saturday at Pullar Stadium in the Michigan Sault.

A goal by Dominic Skrelja on the power play at 10:476 of the third period was the difference.

Skrelja finished the night with a pair of goals while Joel Brandinger assisted on a pair of goals.

Praveen Dhaliwal and Chase Tallaire also scored for the Eagles.

Goaltender Shane Brancato got the start for the Eagles, stopping eight of nine shots in the opening period. Gabe Rosek played the final two periods, stopping 19 of 21 shots the rest of the way.

Thunderbirds goaltender Sam Evola made 32 saves in the game.

Jordan Broome, Colton Hayes, and Mackenzie Walkington scored for the Thunderbirds.

Jacob Kovacs and Tyler Savard assisted on two goals each.

The Thunderbirds finish the regular season with a record of 30-19-3-4 and third in the NOJHL’s West Division while the Eagles finish fourth with a record of 30-21-2-3.

The Thunderbirds will return to action when they open their playoff series with the Blind River Beavers. The series schedule has not yet been finalized.
