Thunderbirds fall in overtime

A power play in overtime was the difference on Sunday as the Soo Thunderbirds dropped a 4-3 decision to the Espanola Express in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action in Espanola.

A.J. Favot scored 1:39 into overtime after the Thunderbirds took a penalty at the end of regulation time.

The Express finished the day with three power play goals on six man advantages.

Zachary Matyasik and Cameron Walker also scored on the power play for Espanola.

Zach Trempner had a goal and an assist for Espanola, as did Matyasik.

Espanola goaltender Joel Rainville stopped 43 shots.

Avery Rebek scored twice for the Thunderbirds.

Colton Hayes and Brock Santa Maria assisted on two goals each.

Rylan Clemons had the other Sault goal.

Thunderbirds goaltender Sam Evola stopped 43 shots.

The Thunderbirds fall to 29-18-3-4 while Espanola improves to 17-32-4-1.

With two games remaining on the regular season schedule, the Thunderbirds return to action on Feb. 28 at home against the Blind River Beavers. Puck drop at the John Rhodes Community Centre is set for 7 p.m.

The Thunderbirds then wrap up the regular season the following night on the road against the Soo (Mich.) Eagles at Pullar Stadium in the Michigan Sault.
