A 3-0 deficit was too much for the Soo Thunderbirds to overcome on Sunday afternoon.

The Timmins Rock opened up a three-goal lead en route to a 3-2 Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory over the Thunderbirds Sunday at McIntyre Arena in Timmins.

Brendan Boyce and Karter Renouf scored just under three minutes apart in the opening period to give the Rock a 2-0 lead.

Tyler Gilberds increased the lead in the second period, beating Thunderbirds goaltender Colin Ahern midway through the second period for what turned into the game-winning goal.

Daniel Bazarin scored late in the second period to get the Thunderbirds on the board. Nick Smith cut the Timmins lead to one in the third with his third goal of the season.

Smith finished the night with a goal and an assist.

Ahern made 30 saves for the Thunderbirds.

Timmins goaltender Tyler Masternak made 25 saves.

The Thunderbirds fall to 3-6-0-1 with the loss while Timmins moves to 6-1-1-0.

The Thunderbirds return to action on Oct. 4 against the Soo (Mich.) Eagles at Pullar Stadium in the Michigan Sault.
