Thunderbirds hold on for win over Beavers

A power play goal by Tyler Savard was eventually the difference for the Soo Thunderbirds on Sunday afternoon.

Savard gave the Thunderbirds a 4-0 lead with just under six minutes to go in the second period in what was eventually a 4-3 Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League win over the Blind River Beavers Sunday in Blind River.

Jacob Kovacs paced the Thunderbirds with a goal and two assists in the contest.

Defenceman Nolan Ford also had a three-point day with three assists.

Kurtis Rogers and Cooper Smyl also scored for the Thunderbirds.

Sault goaltender Dakota Meyer stopped 41 shots, including 20 in the third period.

Blind River netminder Jackson Hjelle stopped 44 shots.

Caleb Serre, Kyle Quinn, and Andrew Malek scored for the Beavers.

The win improves the Thunderbirds record to 29-17-2-3 while Blind River falls to 34-13-1-3.

The Thunderbirds return to action on Wednesday night on the road against the Elliot Lake Wildcats before returning home on Saturday night to face the Soo (Mich.) Eagles.
