Thunderbirds sweep exhibition series with Eagles

The Soo Thunderbirds will open the NOJHL regular season next weekend

The Soo Thunderbirds wrapped up Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League exhibition action on Friday night at home with a victory.

The Thunderbirds skated to a 4-3 win over the Soo (Mich.) Eagles on Friday at the John Rhodes Community Centre, giving the team a sweep of a pair of exhibition games against their cross-border rivals.

The Thunderbirds opened up a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes in the game and led 3-0 after a goal early in the second period.

The Eagles cut into the lead with a pair of goals in the second period before the Thunderbirds got the eventual game-winner off the stick of Jacob Kovacs in the third period.

Kovacs had a pair of goals to pace the Thunderbirds offensively. Matt Bazarin set up a pair of goals while Brock Santa Maria had a goal and an assist. Tyler Dunbar also scored for the Thunderbirds.

Thunderbirds goaltender Dakota Meyer stopped 43 shots.

Caleb Wood, Kyle Portlock, and Jake Lamberty scored for the Eagles.

Eagles goaltender Ryan Gilmore stopped 13 of 17 shots while Shane Brancato stopped all nine shots he faced in the second half of the contest.

The Thunderbirds return to action on Sept. 7 at home when the team opens the NOJHL regular season at the John Rhodes Community Centre against the Eagles.
