ALGOMA UNIVERSITY

The achievements of a pair of Algoma University wrestlers were recently recognized by U Sports, the governing body of varsity athletics in Canada. Bryce Davis and Brody Collison both earned a place on the organization's list of nationally ranked student-athletes, helping to further build the reputation of the Algoma University Thunderbirds wrestling program.
Bryce Davis, a third year Psychology major from Fenton, Mich. is currently ranked 2nd in the nation in the 72 kg weight class. Davis, who earned a bronze medal at the 2018 U Sports Wrestling Championships, is looking to return to the podium at the 2019 championships taking place at the University of Calgary in late February.
"It's great to be ranked at the national level this early in the season, but right now rankings don't mean much to me. The recognition is always great, but I am more concerned about the rankings directly after the U Sports National Championship," said Davis.
Brody Collison, a third year student studying Business Administration, hails from Windsor, Ont. Collison, who achieved a 5th place U Sports ranking in the 57 kg weight class, notes, “being ranked as one of the top wrestlers in the country is a real honour and I'm very appreciative of all the work my coaches and teammates have put in to help me get to where I am today. Our program has been making big strides over the past few years and the future is only looking up from here."
Both athletes credit much of their success to the team’s coaching staff, especially Head Coach, Trevor Manchester.
“Having Bryce ranked 2nd and Brody ranked 5th in the country is a great accomplishment for our team,” said Manchester. “It shows the work that has been put in on the mat this season, not just for these two, but for the rest of the team as well. As much as wrestling is often considered an individual sport, it takes a team to help these student-athletes succeed."
The team heads into a short break from competition before returning to action on Jan. 12 at the Brock Invitational in St. Catharines, Ont.
