NEW YORK, Nov. 29 - During the late 90s Mark McGwire blasted the ball into the stands time and time again.

His bat sold out stadiums wherever the St. Louis Cardinals played and brought excitement to fans everywhere, there was no doubt he would have his place in Cooperstown - until the slugger was asked about steroid use on Capitol Hill.

Sportsbook.com, the world's largest online sportsbook and casino, has posted odds on the controversial nomination.

Odds on whether Mark McGwire will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on first ballot currently sit at +400, Yes, and -700, # In the summer of 1998 McGwire and Sammy Sosa went head to head at the plate, both beat Roger Maris' longstanding record, but McGwire ended the season on top with 70 home runs.

His 583 career home runs make him seventh of all-time in the MLB, and certainly make him worthy of a first-ballot induction, but his performance on the field is tainted by his alleged drug use.

There's a clause on the ballot which indicates character should be considered when voting for a player, and Big Mac's refusal to speak about his past at the congressional hearings in March of 2005 may cost him the Hall of Fame. Another first-time nominee joining McGwire on the Hall of Fame ballot is his former "Bash Brother" with the Oakland Athletics, and an admitted steroid user and AL Rookie of the Year Jose Conseco. Cal Ripken Jr. played his entire career for the Baltimore Orioles from 1981 to 2001 at shortstop and third base. A 19-time MLB All-Star, the Ironman is considered one of the best shortstops to ever play the game and is considered a shoo-in to enter the Hall of Fame in 2007. Former San Diego Padre, Tony Gwynn thought of as one of the best hitters in baseball history joins Ripkin as another sure bet to enter the Hall of Fame. He played his entire career as an outfielder, where he won five Gold Glove Awards. Gwynn has a reputation for being one of the most consistent hitters to ever play. He struck out only 434 times in 9,288 career at-bats, and never hit below .309 in any full season.
