Wolverines run past St. Basil

The White Pines Wolverines used their stellar running attack to vault themselves back into playoff position.

Rushing for 428 yards, the Wolverines ran past the St. Basil Saints 29-14 on Tuesday night in high school football senior division action at Rocky DiPietro Field.

The game, which put an end to week four of the season, was rescheduled after a pair of rainouts on the weekend.

The win improves the Wolverines record to 1-3 and vaults the team into a fourth place tie with Bawating for the final playoff spot. St. Basil falls to 0-4.

The Saints controlled the play early in the contest and built a 7-0 lead 3:33 into the game when Anthony Spina scored on a 33 yard run.

In the second quarter, Alanzo Clarke scampered 82 yards and caught the ensuing two point convert to put the Wolverines ahead 8-7.

Michael Marotta added another touchdown for St. Basil on a one yard scamper to give the Saints a 14-8 halftime lead. Daniel Martens kicked both Saints converts.

The Wolverines took over in the second half as Gary Leith put his squad ahead to stay with a one yard run to take a 15-14 lead.

Chris Tulloch, who had a huge game with 205 yards rushing on 18 carries, closed the scoring with touchdown runs of four and 55 yards. Henri Kristensen kicked three converts for White Pines.

Clarke scampered for 152 yards on nine carries before leaving the game with an injury in the third quarter.

Matt Connors made six tackles for the Wolverines defense while Darcy Rumble added five. Andy Downing recorded 1.5 sacks, Tyler Kostiuk recorded an interception and Jason Caul recovered a fumble.

Spina paced the Saints offense with 90 yards on nine carries. Mark Caputo added 74 yards on eight attempts and Mike Marotta scampered 61 yards on 10 carries.

Quarterback Andrew Allen completed five of eight passes for 89 yards including two strikes each to Tommy Reville and Jordan Zuke for 39 and 52 yards, respectively.

Mark Porco led the St. Basil defense with eight tackles and Marotta added five. Rob Amadio and Porco each recovered a fumble.
