Women's Hockey League report

Two weeks of action are complete while the third week of play concludes on Monday night in the local Women's Hockey League.

Algoma Insurance and Investors Group each picked up a pair of wins in week two while Palmer Paving and Source for Sports remain undefeated.

Algoma Insurance has rebounded from a season-opening 3-2 loss, picking up two wins in a row and the league's first shut out of the season.

Monday night, Algoma won 2-0 over Country Way and Sunday they defeated Crawford's Canines in convincing fashion, 5-1.

Of nine teams in the league, Palmer Paving and Source for Sports are the only undefeated teams to date, each with a win and a tie.

In Algoma's 5-1 win, rookie Andrea Jarzombek scored her first of the season and followed up with a second later in the game.

Fellow rookie, Kristen Nelson netted her first goal, while Debbie "Bam Bam" Beauchamp, and Theresa Glover added singles. Beauchamp also had two assists along with Lori Swan and Jennifer Blahey while Michelle Irwin earned one assist.

Replying for Crawford's was Shelli Ubriaco with assists going to Janis Dose and Jaime Adair.

Solid defensive play contributed to Algoma's 2-0 victory Monday night as "Pick Up Goalie" Karen Armstrong recorded the shut out.

Rookies Jarzombek and Jennifer Blahey stole the show, scoring for Algoma. Jarzombek's goal was her third in two games and Blahey's marked her first of the season. Lori Swan had one assist.

Investors Group also had two wins on the weekend. They handed White Oak Paint their first loss with a 5-3 win on Sunday and defeated Crawford's Canines 4-1 on Monday.

White Oak jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a goal from Lori "Big Bird" Bonnell and held Investors to 2-2 until midway through the second period.

After falling behind 4-2 in the third, White Oak continued to press as Anita "Kit Kat" Kovac closed the gap to 4-3 with just 9 minutes remaining. Investors regained their two-goal lead 5 minutes later to dash White Oak's comeback effort.

Trish Evans, Ellen "MacDash" MacDougall and Carrie Mancuso handled the scoring for Investors. Mancuso had 4 points with a goal and three assists. Evans scored twice, including the winner and added one assist, while "MacDash" had two goals.

Julie Hodkinson had White Oak's other goal. Deedee Watson, Elaine Angelic and Tanya Dowding had one assist each.

In Monday night's 4-1 win, rookie Debbie "Gunner" Gallagher potted her first WHL goal for Investors. "Gunner" was left all alone in front of the net and fired a low shot past goalie Joey Montgomery who didn't have a chance on the play.

Mancuso, Evans and Lisa Case each had 3 points with Mancuso scoring twice and adding one assist. Evans had a goal and two assists and Case earned 3 assists. Andrea Moraca and "MacDash" also recorded one assist.

Lafarge skated to a thrilling 5-4 win over Skip's Kweok to pick up their second win of the young season. Down 3-1 heading into the third period, Lafarge scored three times in four minutes to take a 4-3 lead. Not to be out-done, Skip's Debbie Desgagne scored her second of the game to even things at 4-4.

Exactly one minute later, Lafarge rookie, Kerry Armstrong, scored the winner, her first of the season, unassisted. Other goal scorers for Lafarge were Robin Bourck (2) and one assist, Gerri Miller (1) and two assists and Patti Lutz with a goal and an assist. Brenda Huibers also had one assist.

Scoring for Skip's were Pam Booth and Desgagne, each with two goals and one assist. Rose Jones and Mona Jones pitched in with one assist each.

Palmer Paving and Source for Sports remain undefeated after playing to a 2-2 deadlock in Monday night's finale.

In a showdown between Palmer's Denise "Deeter" Goldade and Source's Lisa Venier, "Deeter" struck first to give Palmer a 1-0 lead after one.

Venier replied with two goals in a 4 minute span in the second frame to give The Source a 2-1 lead. They held on until halfway through the third, when "Deeter" tallied with her second unassisted effort of the game to salvage the 2-2 tie.

Assisting on Venier's goals for Source for Sports were Rhonda Crozier, Karen Gartshore and Heather Coutu.
