Algoma University has announced the establishment of two new partnerships with industry leaders that will support the development of a new Unity Centre of Excellence on AU’s growing campus in Brampton’s emerging Innovation District, as well as new academic programming tied to the business side of the esports industry offered through the University’s School of Business and Economics.
Unity, the world’s leading platform for creating and operating interactive, real-time 3D content has signed a memorandum of understanding with Algoma University which will pave the way for a new Unity Centre of Excellence. The initiative will allow students to engage in a wide range of training opportunities based on the Unity programming platform, while further supporting Algoma’s special mission.
Amuka Esports, Canada’s leader in esports tournaments, venues and leagues has partnered with the Algoma University School of Business & Economics on exciting new programming that will give students the opportunity to learn the foundations of the growing esports industry. The Business of Esports- Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) Specialization and The Business of Esports Certificate will introduce students to the world of esports through the business management and development lens. The programming will provide students with the knowledge, skills and practical applications needed to pursue professional careers in the growing esports industry.
“The partnerships announced today will further align educational programming offered by Algoma University within the expanding Innovation District in the heart of downtown Brampton,” shared Asima Vezina, president and vice-chancellor of Algoma University. “Esports is one of the fastest-growing industries within the sector helping to prepare our students for the careers of tomorrow. In addition, the learning opportunities provided through the Unity Centre of Excellence align with Algoma’s special mission by supporting social justice, equity, diversity and inclusion priorities.”
These new partnerships will further Algoma’s expansion of in-demand, innovative computer science and business related programming, and contribute to the upskilling and re-skilling needs of Brampton’s growing IT sector and beyond. The Unity Centre of Excellence and the addition of esports programming will further position Algoma University as a key player in the development of Brampton’s Innovation District by supporting business growth, entrepreneurial start-ups and student learning across a wide range of industry applications.
The Business of Esports programming is launching in September 2022 with both in-person and online options available to prospective students. Further details on the Unity Centre of Excellence are also expected to be announced by late fall.
