Nick Armstrong has spent countless hours handcrafting this cordwood sauna in Sault Ste. Marie. Cordwood construction was historically used as a barn-building technique.

A recent story profiled Nick Armstrong’s cordwood sauna project which has been entered into DIY Hero, an international competition with a grand prize of $25,000 and the opportunity to be featured in a two-page advertorial in Make Magazine.

Nick says if he does win he plans to donate $10,000 to the Red Cross in support of the Ukraine efforts.

“I’d love to get the word out there. It’s been a lot of fun. It’s been a long, challenging, rewarding project, and I think it’s cool to show people what’s possible if you just put some elbow grease and time into something,” said Armstrong. “I think it would be pretty cool for someone from Sault Ste. Marie to be recognized in one of these global competitions.”
