Local figure skater competes in Skate Ontario OctoberFest

Lake Superior Figure Skating Club pre-novice figure skater Yvonne Barnes competed this week at the Skate Ontario OctoberFest figure skating competition in Barrie, Ont. on Oct. 13-16, 2022. Barnes had successful results, scoring a personal best in both her short and free skate programs.

OctoberFest is one of two Skate Ontario sectional series qualifying events and draws over 100 pre-novice skaters from across the province. Competition is high as skaters are vying for one of 84 spots to qualify for the Skate Ontario Sectional Championships. The Skate Ontario Sectional Championships is a qualifying event for Skate Canada Challenge. Challenge is a national competition which brings together the top skaters from across the country. Team Ontario pre-novice ladies will be made up of the top 16 skaters from the Sectional Championships. Challenge will be held in Regina, Sask., Jan. 25-28, 2023.

At this time, Barnes has secured a spot for the sectional championships, which will be held in York, Ont., Dec. 8-10, 2022. Barnes will continue her training and will compete at the second Sectional series qualifier in York, Ont., Nov. 3-6, 2022.

The Lake Superior Figure Skating Club board of directors is proud of Barnes, and we wish her a successful skating season.
