Wolfpack rebound from loss with 68-0 win over Workington in second round

WORKINGTON, United Kingdom — The Toronto Wolfpack rebounded from their first loss of the season in dominant fashion, downing Workington Town 68-0 on Sunday in the second round of the Kingstone Press League 1 Super 8s playoffs.

Blake Wallace scored four tries, Jonny Pownall had two — including one at the last second — and captain Craig Hall added two tries and 10 conversions for Toronto (16-1-0), which had been upset 26-16 at York City last weekend to open the Super 8s.

The league-leading Wolfpack, aiming for one of two promotion spots to the second-tier championship, play the Keighley Cougars next week in the third round.

Jake Emmitt, James Laithwaite, Liam Kay and Quentin Laula Togaga'e also scored tries for Toronto at Derwent Park.

Wallace had back-to-back tries in the first half after Hall opened the game with a penalty kick. Laula Togaga'e scored and Pownall added his first of the game to put the Wolfpack up 24-0 at the half.

Hall scored his two tries, converting on both, in a five-minute span late in the second half. Toronto outscored Workington (8-8-1) 44-0 over the final 40 minutes.

Under Rugby Football League rules, the 16-team Kingstone Press League 1 is split into two after each team has played the other with the top eight taking part in the Super 8s.

The teams carry forward their regular-season points with the top team after the Super 8s winning automatic promotion. The other promotion spot will be decided via a four-team playoff: No. 2 versus No. 5 and No. 3 versus No. 4, with the winners playing off for the prize.
