On Thursday, June 9, 2022 with his family at his side, Alfred passed away from a sudden cardiac event at the Sault Area Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, ON. His memory will live on in all the lives he touched, but most of all his family; children Matthew and Emily, their mother Gabriele, his sisters Suzanne (Richard) and Linda (Mark), their children Ben, Jenn, Jessi (Andrew), Dan (Sarita), Beth (Eddy), Ricky (Courtney), and his great nieces and nephews. Alfred is predeceased by his parents Hubert and Elizabeth, his kid sister Dorothy, and beloved German shepherd, Griffin. Born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Alfred led the life of a curious outdoorsman. He first studied Forest Technology at Lakehead University, working afterwards in Atikokan, ON where he met his wife, Gabriele Wiesen. He later returned to school as a mature student to complete a Bachelor of Science in Forestry at the University of Toronto, Class of 1988. As a member of the Ontario Professional Forestry Association, he worked in several places across the province, eventually settling in Sault Ste. Marie, ON.
Alfred was a kind, gentle, goofy, creative, and clever man who cared deeply for his friends and family. He loved and appreciated the natural world, and enjoyed camping, hiking, canoeing, fishing at Errington’s Wilderness Island Resort, and teaching his children to sail on Lake Superior. He pulled inspiration from these adventures into his creative pursuits and surprised everyone with his natural talent in wood carving, painting, and pastels. He also found joy in karate, achieving a black belt, and more recently in walking, reaching over 10km per day.
Throughout his life, Alfred appreciated and worked hard to nourish his mental health and spiritual wellbeing. A small, private ceremony to celebrate Alfred’s life and accomplishments will be held by his close family. In lieu of flowers, our family would greatly appreciate donations to the Canadian Mental Health Association in his honour. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758). www.northwoodfuneral.com
