August 23, 1940 - October 15, 2024
It is with profound sadness but also grateful hearts that we announce the courageous and dignified passing of Reg Avery, on his own terms, surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.
Dad lived a long and full life with many treasured memories and accomplishments. He intentionally chose Thanksgiving as a time to celebrate with his family and give thanks for a life well-lived before being laid to rest. We will miss him dearly and hold him forever in our hearts.
Beloved husband of the late Norma Jean Avery (nee Richards). Loving Dad of Sandi Dal Cin (Rony), Shari Robinson (Gary), Trevor Avery (Danielle Fife) and Jennifer Avery. Respected father-in-law of Greg Hutton. Adored Poppa of Andrew Dal Cin (Lindsay Fawcett), Patrick Dal Cin, Michael Dal Cin, Nicholas Robinson, Benjamin Robinson, Cameron Hutton, and Madeline Hutton. Much loved son of the late Borden and the late Frances Avery and treasured son-in-law of the late Charles and the late Jean Richards. Dear brother of Alan Avery (Louise). Dear brother-in-law of Shirley Miller, Peter and Patricia Richards. Uncle of Sean Miller, Colin Richards, Aubrey Richards, Josh Avery, Jake Avery and Jesse Avery.
Our Dad was well-loved and will be missed by extended family and friends, especially Leslie Barnes, Marcel and Mary Brazeau, Doug and Catherine McGregor, Ed and Marilyn Trask and his dear friends and neighbours from Walls Road, Sunnyside Beach and Golf Range Crescent - especially Joy and Ain Kaldmaa and Penny and Bill Manchulenko. In recent conversations, Dad recounted many special memories over the years for which he was truly thankful. Thank you for the numerous gatherings, sailing adventures, travel memories, butter tarts, haircuts and hugs. You all meant the world to him.
Dad was extremely grateful to his parents for the opportunity to have an education that ultimately led to a fulfilling career as a Civil Engineer. He served his community in the role of Junior Engineer for CN Railway (Capriol and London) and then in multiple positions of responsibility for the City of Sault Ste. Marie with his final role being the Director of Public Works and Transportation. Dad encouraged his children and grandchildren to follow their own dreams by working hard and furthering their education.
Dad's most important role was being a husband, a Dad and a Poppa. Our parents considered their greatest legacy to be their four children and seven beautiful grandchildren. In every way imaginable, Dad and Mom were always there for us. We were truly blessed. Dad's devotion to Mom, and especially in his years as a caregiver, was a reflection of true love and a testament to their wedding vows. What an example he set for us all.
On behalf of our Dad, we extend our sincere gratitude to the healthcare team who supported him throughout the years and especially over the last several years. Thank you to Dr. McLean for his many years of professional expertise, thoughtful discourse and compassionate care of both of our parents. Thank you to Dr. Kurniawan for supporting Dad with the utmost grace and respect during his appointments. Thank you to Dr. Colizza for her kindness and crucial role in the final weeks of Dad's life. Thank you to Pharmacist Jon MacDonald for his years of dedicated care, concern and professionalism with both of our parents. Thank you also to the late Dr. Alexander Jablanczy who cared for both parents over several years. To the PSWs from the March of Dimes, especially Andrea - thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your invaluable support with Dad's needs.
In keeping with Dad's wishes, a private family service was held on October 17, 2024 at Arthur Funeral Home - Barton and Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. East, 705-759-2522). Thank you to Reverend Helen Smith for a beautiful service and for taking the time to meet with and comfort our family. Dad lived by the Golden Rule, so an act of kindness or a donation to a charity of your choice is a fitting way to honour a man who was so very kind to others.
Reg is now at peace. We will miss you and love you forever, Dad. See you on the other side. Give Mom a hug from us.
Love your Family xo
