B'naaswi Biiaaswah passed away at the Sault Area Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on November 28, 2021, at the age of 64. He was a member of the Whitefish Lake First Nation in Birch Island, ON.

He is survived by his wife Lola Greatwalker-Biiaaswah and his children and grandchildren; Liza Buswa and her daughter Rainee, Agashimaingash (Frank Jr.) Buswa, Carmella Buswa and her sons Dezmen and Aden, Neebin-Nodin Buswa, Gijik Buswa and Chase. B’naaswi loved and cared deeply for his children and grandchildren.

Also survived by his siblings Ruth Ann (John) Waucaush-Goorhouse, Steven John, Victoria Lynn, Jane (Steve) Buswa-Schwander, and brother Steven Charles. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank N. and Helen R. Buswa and brother Brian Buswa.

B'naaswi led a fulfilled life and was dedicated to his Anishinaabe culture. He was a well known pow wow dancer and was known worldwide for his dancing. He did mentor a young boy, teaching him about "Anishinaabe" old style of grass dance. He was also a four time, 2-step world champion. He mentored and shared his knowledge of “Anishinaabe” style of grass and fancy dancing.

Being a dedicated Social Worker who specialized in substance abuse, he shared his life experiences and promoted strength and hope for those battling addictions. He walked the "red road" and truly "walked his talk" and maintained sobriety for 34 years. He also sponsored a few members of AA.  

He was a proud Ogichidaa (warrior) who served in the US Marines for close to ten years. He was a Staff Sergeant E-6 stationed at Kaneohe, Hawaii. Field Artillery & Environmental and Egress mechanic - September 1976 - Feb 1986.

His friendships crossed countries and lifetimes; he was a known comedian who enjoyed making people laugh. B'naaswi was an excellent artist who loved to draw, paint, bead and sew. His friendship and compassion will live on within the hearts of many people, his friendship with Bill W. was of utmost importance.

His wife and family would like to thank staff at Sault Area Hospital and O'Sullivan Funeral Home for all the support you have shown. Also, special thanks to the fellowship and friends of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Due to covid restrictions, a private service has already taken place in Bay Mills, Michigan.
