With broken hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Vera, less than one month shy of her 95th birthday. She left this world peacefully on August 22nd at the Sault Area Hospital, surrounded by her children.

Now reunited with her husband Donald Edward, Vera was an amazing mother and role model to Steve (late Maria), Ken (late Darlene), Nancy Peters (late Bert), Brian (Kathy), and Donna-Lee Sartor (Nello). Grandmother (“G-Ma”) of Jill Megler (Mike), Mitch (Meaghan), Nick Peters (Stacey), Julia Vercillo (Marco), Hilary Peters, Miriam (Chris), Eric Sartor (Katie), Olivia, Noah, and all of our four-legged companions. Great Grandmother (“GG”) to Juliana and Joey Megler, Mikenna and Everett, Ophelia Paquette, and Luca Vercillo. Daughter of Florence and David Davis. Predeceased by her brothers Frank (late Molly) and Roy Davis, and sister Marion Kennedy (late Jack). She was adored by her many nieces and nephews from both the Burgess and Davis families, and a lifelong special friend of the Sartor families.

Vera lived the kind of life that we should all aspire to: one filled with love and laughter until the very end. She never sat idle if she could help it. If she wasn’t out enjoying a day at the beach or a stroll through nature with her hiking group, she was giving back to her community in some way. It didn’t matter if it was volunteering with the Holy Trinity Church, delivering Meals on Wheels, sewing for Days for Girls, or performing with the Senior Singers; Vera just loved making connections with people. Her warm, bright smile and open heart could make anyone feel at ease.

Her resourcefulness was not just impressive, but also a source of entertainment for the entire family. Vera’s creative problem-solving skills were unmatched; so much so that we called her our own little MacGyver. There was rarely an issue that she couldn’t, or at least didn’t try, to solve herself.

Despite facing more obstacles and loss in the last several years than many people do in a lifetime, Vera always found joy in the seeing the people she loved live their best lives. Nothing made her happier than seeing her grandchildren and great grandchildren thrive. Growing up surrounded by her understanding, acceptance, and unconditional love was a true gift.

Our families wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff at Pathways (and a special mention to Candace and Morgan) for making her feel so welcome during her time living there.

We also wish to thank Lindsay, Lisa, Sarah, and the rest of the ICU and Palliative Care staff at the Sault Area Hospital for their outstanding support and care.

Family and friends are invited to visit at the Arthur Funeral Home – Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington Street East, 705-759-2522) on Thursday, August 29, 2024, from 11:30 am until 1:30 pm. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 pm, followed by a private interment. Memorial contributions payable by cheque or online to the Sault Area Hospital Foundation or Diabetes Canada would be appreciated.
