ANNA CHLEBANA - ON HER WAY SEPTEMBER 14, 2023
In Belleville General Hospital with family at her side.

Our mother, our grandmother, our mother-in-law, our friend, our Teta Anna, was ready to go to be with her husband, Alois, her friends and family who had gone before her, and with her Lord on September 14, 2023.

Anna Suplincak was born in Sukha Bron’ka, Ukraine on November 18, 1930. She endured many challenges in her early years. Near the end of WWII, she left the Ukraine, then Czechoslovakia and on to Germany. There, she met the love of her life and they ventured off to Canada to start a life together and to raise 3 wonderful, accomplished children, Michael, Joanne & Frank. Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario was home for all of their married lives. They were devout Catholics, dedicated parents and reliable, compassionate and generous friends.

Anna was well known for volunteering at her church & donating her time to devotion, baking cookies and making knitted slippers. Her knitted and crocheted items were amazing, especially since she was self-taught. So many newborns appreciated her baby blankets, while toes were kept warm in the slippers that she handmade for so many people. Anna enjoyed gardening and her massive tulip garden was the envy of passersby and the whole neighborhood. Anna had a calmness about her, as well as a surprising sense of humor. She appreciated even the little things done for her, remembering and mentioning them for a long time. That was especially considerate since she was usually the one who did things for others.

Anna’s spotless kitchen was an inviting cozy place, always busy with a freezer full of delicious cookies, cakes and Slovak & Ukrainian dinners. Those requested dinners were enjoyed by all who visited. Anna’s guests would be treated with a hot cup of coffee or tea, with a plate of delicious goodies already on the table for them to enjoy.

Anna spoke numerous languages in her life; Ukrainian, Russian, Czech, Slovak, and English once in Canada, but her main language was love…love for her faith, her husband, her 3 children and their spouses & 5 grandchildren. Now, Anna has 3 great-granddaughters and although they will never hear her stories first-hand, undoubtedly, their parents will lovingly pass them down. Some parts of her life stories may be forgotten; but having heard them from her, we realize that the stories of her life are a part of all of us who will miss her.

Her extended family, from the Ukraine and Slovakia, passing through Spain, Portugal & Ireland, down to Texas, California, Illinois & Wisconsin, north to Saskatchewan & Ontario, will miss her smile, her chuckle and the twinkle in her eyes. We will repeat her stories, look at her photos, remember her ways & her recipes and enjoy them all. Anna made a difference in all of our lives. From tickling baby toes to her devious Canasta card playing, her spunk, her strength and tenacity, she was our Ma, our Grandma, our mother-in-law, our great-grandma. She will be remembered for all that she endured, overcame and embodied. Anna Chlebana was, and still will be, an amazing example, worthy of great admiration and respect. We now have another beautiful Angel watching over us all.
