Maria Duoba made her final voyage on Sunday, June 30, 2024 passing away quietly in her 97th year.
A Lithuanian by birth, Marie immigrated to Sault Ste. Marie Canada in 1949 after spending challenging years in wartime and post-war Germany. Those years made her stoic, independent and resilient – the ultimate survivor – but her enormous heart and wonderful sense of humor never left her. Maria was generous and giving to a fault and was known to feed all who sat at her table beyond capacity.
Once in the Sault, Maria never looked back and made Canada her home surrounded by family and friends. Her social life revolved around the small but close-knit Lithuanian community, with summers spent at the family cabin on Lake Superior and vacations in Chicago visiting family. Family was her constant priority and first love.
Maria is survived by her children and grandchildren. Son Dennis Duoba and wife Rosa (nee Bruno) and daughter Lilli Duoba and husband Dave Dilks. Grandchildren Daniel (Jasmine), Andrew (wife Ashley Fecteau), Trevor (wife Danielle Henry) and Jeremy (Deniz). Great grandchildren Cooper, Brodie and Abigail. She was predeceased by husband Jonas in 1983 and son Albert in 1998.
Maria lived her life the best she knew and left this earth knowing her children and grandchildren were in wonderful strong loving relationships. Our hearts mourn the loss of our wonderful, caring and thoughtful matriarch. She will be greatly missed.
Our thanks to the staff at Mapleview who provided care for Maria over the past few years and Zion Lutheran Church for providing a lifetime of spiritual guidance and fellowship.
