FINLAYSON, Edward BIO

The family announces with great sadness the peaceful passing of a treasured father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Ted Finlayson, on December 26, 2017 in his 87th year at ARCH Hospice in Sault Ste. Marie, ON surrounded by family members.  Ted was born February 15, 1931 in Sault Ste. Marie to Gregor Malcolm “Mac” Finlayson and Mary Janet “Jean” Becking. He is survived by the love of his life of 66 years, Joyce Marilyn Porter, married on 24 August 1951 in Sault Ste. Marie, ON. Also survived by one brother, Jack (Elva) Finlayson.  Father of Carol (Rick) Heaslip, James “Jim” (Christine) Finlayson and John (Meril) Finlayson. Grandpa to Christopher (Lisa Poeta) Heaslip, Greg (Julie Girard) Heaslip, Jason (Allison Legere) Finlayson, Shannan (Greg) Mayer, and Jeremy Finlayson. Great-grandpa to Alexia and Eddie Heaslip, Elizabeth and A.J. Heaslip, Roderick and Maxwell Mayer, Teddy Finlayson and Jayden Legere. Pre-deceased by his siblings Gladys Bayles (late Al), Kay Brodie (late Art), and Alex (late Sally). Ted was also the loving brother-in-law of the late Shirley (late Tom) Woods, late Dana (late Ermie) Folco, and late Lois Porter. Also pre-deceased by his in-laws, Clifford Porter and Jennie Kenshol. Ted is also survived by many loved and loving nieces and nephews. Ted was a former employee of St. Mary’s Paper Mill as a Papermaker where he worked until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the Masonic Temple, Algoma Lodge A.F. & A.M. #469 where he served as Worshipful Master in 1985 and then as Algoma District Deputy Grand Master. One of his great accomplishments was learning the chanter to take part in Shriners parades!  Family was of utmost importance to Ted and many enjoyable years were spent at the cottage on McCarrel’s Lake with family and friends, and at their winter retreat in Zephyrhills, FL. It is a well-known fact that Ted was a lifelong supporter of the Toronto Blue Jays, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Sault Greyhounds and hardly ever missed a televised game! The family wish to acknowledge the wonderful care of the Kitatalo Finnish Rest Home staff where Ted and Joyce have made their home for the last four years, and the excellent care and compassion shown by the staff at ARCH Hospice in Ted’s final weeks. Friends are invited to visit at Arthur Funeral Home – Barton & Kiteley Chapel on Saturday, December 30, 2017 from 10:30 until 11:30 AM. Memorial service to take place in the chapel at 12:00 PM. Rev. Nancy Ferguson officiating. The family also thanks Rev. Nancy Ferguson and the UCW of Emmanuel United Church for their compassion and assistance. Cremation has taken place; interment to follow at Sylvan Valley Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations may be made to ARCH (www.archhospice.ca).
