GILLGRASS, Geraldine-BIO
Was peacefully embraced by her Lord, our Father in Heaven, on Sept. 7, 2018, with her husband of 63 years (September 17), Robert Gillgrass Senior, by her side. Gerry was born on Oct. 5, 1931 in Sault Ste Marie to her later parents Gertrude and Harry Fowler. She was the oldest sister of four children, Harvey Fowler (Helen), Wayne Fowler (Theresa) and late Valerie Armstrong (Keith). She was a special sister-in-law to Doris Hewett (late Leslie), late sisters-in-law Isabel, Agnes and Jenny, late brothers-in-law Bill and George. She embraced the role of the family matriarch and was a loving and protective mother, as well as a friend and mentor in the later years to her four children; Robert Gillgrass Jr. (Karen), Thomas Gillgrass, Sandra Smith (Terry) and Paula Thomas (Mark).  'Grandma' and 'Nana' to her true pride and joys; Allison Notte, Michael Gillgrass, Darcie Nelli, Dean Smith, Kendra Gillgrass, Mathew Thomas and Stephanie Thomas.  A very special great grandma to Britton Notte and Easton Notte.  She always had some advice for her grandchildren, but most importantly reminded them to be grateful for all that they had.  Gerry was extremely proud of her family and would sing their praises to all who would listen. She was an aunt to many nieces and nephews who all adored her, especially for her delicious cooking and baking treats.  She was always modest with her kitchen skills, noting it could always use 'a bit more of this and a little less of that', even though to everyone else it all tasted perfect. Gerry was a proud and devout Catholic and her faith in Jesus and the Church will live on through her spirit as we always remember her.  Gerry was an avid bingo player and looked forward to her weekly outings with her lady friends. While the last year of her life was a little tough, she had the most compassionate care from the amazing nurses and staff at the F.J. Davey Home, Cedar 1. They always ensured her comfort through to her last breath. Dr. Chung and NP Lyndsay were integral in Gerry's care and always ensured that Gerry's best interests and wishes were met. Gerry's family could not be more appreciative for the amazing care she received.  She also enjoyed her visits with Sister Roberta. Per Gerry's wishes there will be no visitation, a Funeral Mass will be held for family and friends at St. Jerome's Catholic Church on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018 at 11 a.m., Reverend Pat Woods officiating. Reception to be held at the church following the mass. Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.  Memorial donations to the F.J. Davey Home Foundation and A.R.C.H would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to the Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. E. 705-759-2522). Messages of condolence may be offered at www.arthurfuneralhome.com

"Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free to follow the path God made me.  I took his hand when I heard him call.  I turned my back and left it all.  I could not stay another day to love, laugh, to work or play.  Lift up your heart and share with me, God wants me now.  He's set me free"
