HUMBY, Catharine

Posted

Catharine (Kay) Humby, a life-long resident of Thunder Bay, died in Pioneer Ridge, Saturday, April 10, 2004, 38 days before her 102nd
birthday. Daughter of David and Rose Bour, Catharine was born on the family farm in the Oliver Township May 19, 1902; one year after her
parents settled on what is now Maki Road. As a young girl, she attended SS#2A Oliver School on Oliver Road and the United Church in Murillo. After marrying David Humby in April 1921, she moved to Fort William where the couple had four children. Catharine was a long-time member of the United Church of Canada, regularly attending Wesley United Church, Brodie Street. She was extremely proud of her family and the latest family photos were always shared with visitors, often accompanied with the latest achievements of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and
great-great-grandchildren. Catharine was an accomplished self-taught musician who enjoyed playing the piano right until her passing. At last
year’s Canada Day celebration at Pioneer Ridge, Catharine was introduced as “the 101 year old piano player” and played O Canada and the Maple Leaf Forever. Her love of music and musical talent was passed to succeeding generations of her family as a living legacy. Catharine is survived by daughters Shirley Jobb and Patricia (Sven) Carlson, of San Diego; grandchildren Jeannette (Don) Patola and Susan (Alfie) Childs, of Thunder Bay, Bill Humby (Christiane Larouche) of Calgary, Sharon (Tom) Reynolds. Maureen Jobb and Rick (Paula) Carlson of San Diego, Jennifer (Don) Martone of Sault Ste Marie and Gerald (Brenda) Humby of Dartmouth; daughter-in-law Connie Humby; seventeen great grandchildren, fifteen great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive. She was predeceased by her parents, sisters Alice Bour and Ada Askin, brothers William and Albert Bour, two sons Gerald (Jessie) and Howard, and son-in-law Bob Jobb. A special thanks to the staff at Pioneer Ridge for all their consideration during Catharine’s time there. And thanks to the two extra special angels who were on shift on the last evening of her journey. A Service of Remembrance will be held on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 W. Gore Street at James with Rev. David Sparks officiating. A private family graveside service will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens. If friends so desire memorial donations to the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
