(December 14, 1923 – January 3, 2018) – It is with mixed emotions that the family of Christine Jurczenko, announces her passing at a local nursing home on Wednesday, January 3, 2018. Christine in her 94th year is predeceased by her husband Ivan, and is survived by her son Gunther, grandchildren Michael (MaryAnn) and Michele (Mike), and her great grandchildren Justin and Jordan. Christine, her husband and their son emigrated to Canada in 1951 as did many others in the post war era. Together with others, she cultivated the physical, social, cultural and economic landscape of Sault Ste. Marie. She is known primarily for her culinary skills, baking and cooking as well as gardening. Justin and Jordan will attest to the fact that her honey-gingerbread cookies and dill pickles are second to none. As a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the former St. Mary’s the Protectress Greek Orthodox Church, she engaged in many fund-raising activities, dinner and dances to fund the eventual construction of the church on Wilson Street. A private family celebration of Christine’s life will be held a later date. The family would like to acknowledge the excellent care and compassion shown by the care givers in Christine’s darkest hours. In lieu of charitable donations, the family wishes you to spread Christine’s message that the elderly deserve to live with dignity and deserve better than is currently deemed as the accepted practice. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758).
