Passed away peacefully at the Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH) on Friday, July 12, 2024 in her 79th year. Erna was born on July 14, 1944, and was the daughter of the late Johannes Burghout and the late Rika Burghout (nee Wegen). She was a beloved daughter, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, nana and friend. She will be greatly missed by her children: Laura Melton, Eric Sired, Cathy Grant-nee Sired, Steven Sired and predeceased by her son, Brian Sired. Survived by her siblings Betsy Closs, Jim Burghout, and Ben Burghout and predeceased by her sister Janet Dwars and brother Joseph Burghout.
Her loss will be deeply felt by her siblings, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends that she had gathered throughout her life.
Having lived on beautiful St. Joseph's Island for many years, Erna held a special place in her heart for the Island and treasured the precious memories of her family visiting. Erna found immense joy in spending time with her late husband Rob Kay at their home on the Island, indulging in bird watching and cherishing the tranquility and serenity with the beautiful sunsets and sunrises that it offered. She had most recently moved to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
Erna’s love for her family, the beauty of nature, and the cherished bonds of friendship will forever be remembered. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
A celebration of life will take place in Owen Sound and will be announced at a later date.
Erna’s final days were spent in the loving care of the Algoma Residential Community Hospice in Sault Ste. Marie. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in her name to ARCH.
