The family of Martin Edward McPherson are saddened to announce the death of our brother Martin, on Sunday June 26th, 2022, at the Sault Area Hospital, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He died peacefully at the age of 83 following administration of the Last Rites by Father Trevor Scarfone.
He is the son of the late Catherine (nee Dixon) and James Martin McPherson. Martin is survived by his siblings Terry McPherson (Bruna), Maureen McCarthy (Martin Joseph), Colleen Buscarini and Bill McPherson (Claire).
He is predeceased by siblings Sharon Doyle, Mary Martynuck and J. Philip McPherson.
Nephew to Elsie McPherson (late William) as well as to many aunts and uncles on our mother’s side. He had numerous cousins in his Sudbury family, a place Martin truly loved.
Martin was an uncle to 23 nieces and nephews but had a special relationship with Kim & Greg, Jayden and Dakota.
Martin Edward was known by either of his given names but most fondly by the nickname “Buster”.
The story goes, that as a toddler he had a thick head of curly brown hair. At the time there was a children’s’ shoe company called Buster Brown Shoes. So, his father started calling him the name “Buster” and it stuck. His family to this day, have called him Buster which he tolerated with good humour.
After High School, Buster joined the Canadian Army and served Canada in Germany and abroad for several years, receiving an Honourable Discharge in October of 1958.
On return to Canada, he worked in the brick-laying trade as well as a small engine mechanic after appropriate education in those fields.
In the early 1970s, he returned to school at Western University in London, Ontario. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Comparative Religions.
He was always interested in environmental issues and was a prolific reader with many areas of interest.
In my parents’ declining years, he assisted them with tenderness and devotion, caring for them in their family home.
Thank you to Martin’s nephew Craig Martynuck, as well as many other family members in assisting Martin, it was all greatly appreciated. To the staff in the emergency department at the Sault Area Hospital, thank you for providing your skilled care and comfort towards Martin and our family.
Thank you to Martin’s landlord of many years, Peter Lobert, who was always helpful in assisting Buster especially in his declining years.
His life will be commemorated at a Mass of Christian burial will be held at Precious Blood Cathedral, on Tuesday July 5, 2022, at 11:00am followed by his internment in the McPherson plot at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, both to be officiated by Father Jeff Shannon.
