OOSTERBAAN, Dinant

We are saddened to announce the passing of Dinant (Din) P. Oosterbaan on Monday, August 14th, 2023 at the Sault Area Hospital at the age of 88. 

Din was born in The Hague, Netherlands and was the son of Nicolaas Oosterbaan and Therese Christine Oosterbaan (nee van den Berg), the 6th child of 10. He is predeceased by his wife Ann (2018) of 59 years and is survived by his children James (Barbara) of Calgary, Alberta, Edward (Alison) of Calgary, Alberta and Patricia (Martin) of Georgetown, Ontario. Opa to Laura (Owen), Valerie (Dave), Stephen, Erik, Shannon, Claire, Neal, Colin (Leigh) and Daina and great grandfather of Oliver and Theodore. 

Din immigrated to Canada in December 1953 where he began his career working with the Bank of Nova Scotia with postings in Ottawa, Montreal, Kitchener, Sudbury, Beardmore and Blind River. Din met Ann in Montreal and they were married in August 1959 at Trinity Anglican Church in Sainte-Agathe des Monts, Quebec. After 17 years with the bank Din decided to venture into business and purchased The Old Mill Motel in Blind River in March 1971. He operated the Motel for three and a half years when he sold it and accepted the position of Diocesan Treasurer for the Diocese of Algoma in Sault Ste. Marie in January 1975. After 22 years with The Diocese, Din made the next big step into retirement in 1997. He continued on as Treasurer for The Provincial Synod until 2001 and remained very active and involved in the church community participating in many groups and committees. 

Friends are invited to a service at St. Luke's Cathedral (160 Brock Street) on Friday, August 18, 2023 at 10 am.  The Very Reverend James McShane officiating. Interment St. Luke’s Columbarium following the service. A luncheon will be served at Trinity Centre (352 Northern Avenue, across the parking lot from Holy Trinity Anglican Church) at 12:30 pm. Memorial contributions payable by cheque or online to the Holy Trinity Memorial Fund or the charity of your choice.
