After a virtually lifelong battle with Type 1 Diabetes and related cardiac complications in more recent years, Gilbert passed from this world quickly and peacefully at Sault Area Hospital on Friday night July 2, 2021 at the age of 60, after having the opportunity to visit and talk with immediate family members in the ICU. Lightning flashed, thunder rumbled, and the rain poured down shortly after his passing. "Gibby" is flying free now and no longer in pain.

Gilbert, son of Leo Portelance and the late Jeanne d'Arc Dubois, leaves behind Hilary Evans, his loving and devoted partner of 20 years. He will be sorely missed by sons Jessie Hachey, Stephen Jagges (Nicole), Jarod Jagges, and Jeff Couturier (Alicia). Treasured brother of Rachel Atkinson (Gary), Richard Portelance (Tina), and Julie Torcaso (Enzo). He also leaves behind 4 grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many aunts, uncles, and extended family in the Sudbury area and beyond. Gilbert holds a special place in the hearts of his family and many long-time friends and will be missed more than words can express. His zest for life, sense of humour, and ability to find the silver lining even when faced with adversity has touched many. His "1000 watt" smile was like a ray of sunshine.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation for all the efforts made by the paramedics, ER staff and physicians, as well as the cardiac team for all their care when Gilbert came to the hospital in the early hours of June 30th. Particular thanks are extended to the ICU nurses who cared for him so attentively until his passing, and for making it possible for his immediate family as well as his dog, Buddy, to visit with him and bring him some joy and peace in his final days.

As per Gilbert's wishes, arrangements have been entrusted to O'Sullivan Funeral Home and Cremation Centre.  On Tuesday, July 13, 2021 there will be a procession to escort the hearse to the Crematorium at the corner of Peoples Road and 4th Line. Friends are invited to meet for 1:30 pm at O'Sullivan's, 215 St. James Street, Sault Ste. Marie, ON P6A 1P7 (corner of Cathcart and St. James) to follow behind the immediate family. To adhere to COVID-19 protocols, we ask that everyone remain in their cars. As no one is able to enter the building at this time, after the procession all are invited to come to Gilbert and Hilary's home on Peoples Road for an outdoors gathering to reminisce and share fond memories. Gilbert's wish was for everyone to remember him as he was and focus on the good times. Casual attire, denim preferred (wear your jeans)--that was Gibb's style. No suits and ties please.

In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make a contribution to assist the family with expenses at this difficult time can do so through O'Sullivan Funeral Home in person or online. Should you have questions, O'Sullivan's telephone number is (705) 759-8456. Please visit www.osullivanfuneralhome.com to leave online condolences to the family.
