October 13, 1943 - July 3, 2021 - Passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 77. Survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Anja.

Proud father of John (Heather) and Jason (Cherie). Loving Pappa of Jack, Hanna and Hope. Predeceased by his brother, Heikki (Vuokko). Survived by his brothers Matti (Mirjam) and Esko (Kathy). Veikko leaves behind many nieces and nephews in Canada, as well as his cousins and friends in Finland.

Affectionately known to family and close friends as Tapsa, Veikko was more widely known by his adopted “Canadian” name, Steve. After immigrating to Canada in the mid-sixties, he met his wife, Anja in the Soo. He enjoyed a long career as an electrician, eventually running his own business (Elteck Electrical Contracting) for several decades. He will be fondly remembered as a strong, quiet man with a kind and helpful nature. His actions spoke louder than his words, and anything worth doing was worth doing well.

Veikko’s many interests included woodworking, hunting, and fishing. He was a dedicated member of the Kaleva Male Chorus, performing locally and internationally for over fifty years. He had a wide circle of friends and was dedicated to the Finnish community, especially the Ontario Finnish Resthome Association.  A talented handyman, he always had projects on the go. He could think his way through any problem and used his vast technical skills to create simply beautiful things. Whether he was transforming a block of wood into an intricate carving, putting the finishing touches on a homemade piggy bank or building the family camp at Pine Island, he combined a “do it right the first time” mentality with a keen eye for the small details that made his work so very special. Most recently he spent Father’s Day at the camp and was absolutely thrilled to have his loved ones with him over the last few weeks.

We would like to thank everyone who helped Veikko during his illness, including Dr. Rassouli, nurse Paula and the wonderful team at the Cancer Centre. Dr. Booth and nurse Mike worked tirelessly to ensure that he could spend his last few months comfortably at home. We will be forever grateful for their kind and thoughtful care.

As per Veikko's wishes, a private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Ontario Finnish Resthome Association - New Mauno Kaihla Koti Redevelopment Fund would be greatly appreciated by the family. Arrangements entrusted to Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington Street E. 705-759-2522.
