She moved to Sudbury obtaining her masters in social work starting a 34-year career working with children for Health Sciences North. Karen loved the outdoors whether it be gardening, playing numerous sports, camping or her favourite pastime kayaking. Karen loved to travel especially to her favourite destination Jamaica, but her biggest joy was simply hanging out with her grandson Brody with whom she had a special bond.
