It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Maria J Smith, our mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend and dedicated member of the community. Maria passed away with family by her side in her home on St. Joseph Island on July 23, 2023, at the age of 76. Her departure leaves us heartbroken, as it came too soon. There was still so much life for her to live, so much to offer, and countless moments to share. Maria, a loving mother to her three sons, Vernon (Vanessa), Geoffrey, and Stephen (Amanda), will be profoundly missed. Her memory will live on through her cherished grandsons, Joshua (Quinn) and Clark, and her precious great-granddaughter, Sophia. Maria leaves behind her brother, John, and sisters, Diena (Laurence) and Johanna (David). She will also be missed by her several nieces and nephews.

Maria was born in Eindhoven, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands, and at the age of three months immigrated to Canada with her parents Martin and Anna, eventually settling on St. Joseph Island. Maria remained extremely proud of both her Dutch and adopted Canadian heritage.

Maria devoted much of her career to Matthews Memorial Hospital in various roles. However, her true passion was realised in enriching and enhancing the beauty of her surrounding community.

Maria was a well-known volunteer in her community, along the North Shore and in Sault Ste. Marie. Always ready to share her expertise, she was never afraid to get her hands dirty, especially with anything to do with horticulture. She was one of the founding members of both the St. Joseph Island Horticultural Society more than 50 years ago and the Algoma Master Gardeners 38 years ago. Maria was always a leader and a mentor to many and was a prime example of volunteerism.

Maria was well known for her boundless energy, while raising three boys she found time to work at the Island Fort, spearheaded the renovation of the Sailors Encampment non denominational church, and was heavily involved in all community events such as community nights, local art shows, local quilting shows, the Red Hat society, the 4-H and we lost count...

Maria’s creative endeavours went beyond using a shovel and shears, she was also a talented painter and quilter and participated in many shows. She drew inspiration from beautiful St. Joseph Island in all seasons, a testament to her love and appreciation for the beauty of the island—her lifelong home.

Maria was an avid traveller, exploring various regions of Canada and numerous international destinations like Panama, Iceland, Europe, including multiple visits to her birthplace, Holland.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude towards the healthcare professionals - doctors, nurses, personal support workers - who have shown unwavering dedication and care. Additionally, we are forever indebted to the multitude of friends who have stood by her over the years, showering us with their kindness and invaluable support. As well as her loyal companion, Rusty.

Their collective efforts have been a beacon of hope and solace during this challenging time.

I give you this one thought to keep —

I am with you still; I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,

I am the diamond glints on snow,

I am the sunlight on the ripened grain,

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush,

I am the swift, uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circled flight;

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not think of me as gone —

I am with you still in each new dawn.

Rust en Vrede Maria

…And into the garden I go, to lose my mind, and find my soul!
