STRUM, Marie Elizabeth

(December 23, 1946 - October 15, 2022) - Daughter of the late Ben and Jacoba Pomber, sister of Philis Pomber (late Clayton Farrell). Mother of Laura Strum (special friend Bruce Douville) and Jordan Strum (Shanthi Minor) and always a friend of Michael.

In her 75 years, Marie touched many lives. As a nurse, she spent most of her career delivering babies at the Sault Area Hospital. She loved horses and trained them for racing when she was young; as a teenager, she was the first, and only, female member of the Algoma Turf Club. Marie was also a keen enthusiast of all things Scottish, and her three-week trip to Scotland in 2000 was an experience that she would treasure for the rest of her life.

She was a kind, funny, vibrant person who, as she herself would often say, loved cats, dogs, horses, and people—not necessarily in that order.  She also loved reading, taking walks, dancing around the living room to her favourite music, cuddling with her cats, and playing puzzle games on her computer. She enjoyed J.R.R. Tolkien's writing and would read her omnibus edition of "The Lord of the Rings" every autumn until her eyesight grew too poor. Even then, she still enjoyed Peter Jackson's film adaptations of the books.

Her family would like to thank the nurses, volunteers, and custodial staff who worked on 3B at the Sault Area Hospital during her lengthy stay from December 2017 until February 2019, as well as the staff and volunteers at Cedarwood Lodge, where she spent the final years of her life. Thank you all for the many kindnesses and great patience that you have shown to her and to us over the years.

By Marie's own request, her funeral arrangements are private. Memorial donations (payable by cheque or online) to Therapeutic Ride Algoma, the Sault Ste Marie Humane Society, or to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25 would be appreciated in lieu of flowers. But perhaps the best way to remember her is to do something unexpected for somebody to make them smile.  Arrangements entrusted to Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. E. 705-759-2522).  Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.arthurfuneralhome.com for the Strum family.
